The theme of Human Rights 365
" I call on states to honor their obligation to protect human rights every day of the year. I call on People to hold their governments to account."
UN Secretary- Gerneral Ban Ki-moon
This year's slogan Human Rights 365 encompasses the idea that every day is Human Rights Day. It celebrates the fundamental proposition in the Universal Declaration that each one of us, everywhere is entitled to the full range of Human Rights, that Human Rights belong equally to each of us to bind us together as a global community with the same ideals and values.
Excerpt From The Statement of the High Commissioner of Human Rights
United Nations
Zeid Ra'ad al Hussein
" All Human Beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.": is perhaps the most resonant and beautiful words of any international agreement. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights promises to all the economic, social political, cultural and civil rights that underpin a life free of want and fear.
These Human Rights are not country specific. They are not a reward for good behavior, or particular to a certain area or social group. These are the inalienable entitlements of all people, at all times everywhere, 365 Days a Year.
They are the rights of people of every color, from every race and ethnic group; whether or not they have disabilities; citizens or migrants; no matter their sex, their class, their caste , their creed, their age or sexual orientation..."
Certainly every civilized human being stands for these principles. As a Jew and as an Israeli American I cannot say that this holds true for my people. I am a member of an indigenous People whose land is frequently up for negotiation with a group of non indigenous people who seek to destroy mine. I believe in every tenant and principle that these statements hold, but I am very concerned that they are not put into practice on many levels. I see another member of an indigenous people, Advocate Veerji Kolhi whose work speaks for itself in the struggle to uphold these principles. I see his Holy Hindu Shrines destroyed. I see the women of his people being raped, forced into marriages before they are of proper marriageable age, and forced to convert to a religion that is not their own. I see my Nation of Israel being denied the rights that are guaranteed to them under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights but Most of all by the G-d's own Promise to my people. I see discrimination running rampant upon Jews and upon Hindus in India and in Pakistan, and I am not seeing the Justice and tangible assistance occurring to rebuild these shrines, restore these devastated communities, or the returning of dignity to those whose basic rights are being denied. I will never stop standing for these principles and will never stop my work to join in these efforts to bring about change in this world. I will stand forever with Advocate Veerji Kolhi and other True Activists like him to make these issues become known to the international community. I am not ashamed nor am I ever afraid. I love my Nation Israel and above all, I love my G-d. Truth is power over deception. I wait for the promises to become a reality! When I see the change and the restoration of the basic Human rights mentioned in these statements, I will know for certain that our work is not in vain.
