Debate onBonded Labor By Zemira Eli Natan

-----IUFE UPDATE-----

Advocate Veerji Kolhi has informed IUFE that the 72 Bonded Labor Victims are still on Protest after 7 Days of receiving no relief for their suffering and no response from the Police on the return of their personal possessions and their animals! Seven Days is too long for any human being to survive without relief!  IUFE supports Advocate Veerji Kolhi in his effort to protect his people from injustice and provide them with equal rights under the law.  Work is presently being done to assist Advocate Veerji Kolhi in the ability to meet the basic needs of these victims.

Receiving No Relief, No Food, Water or Shelter

In the past month IUFE has reported on  cases concerning Bonded Labor. Some of the issues that have been reported include the Destruction of Hindu Villages and Shrines , Open fire on newly freed Bonded Labor victims, The Rape and impregnation of a 14  year old girl, Death threats against Advocate Veerji Kolhi and the 72 Victims of Bonded Labor that were recently freed by order of the High Court of Sindh.  All of these incidents can be read about on this blog.  IUFE's Executive Director, Zemira Eli Natan  has been featured in interviews with Vlad Tepes to describe some of these incidents and inform the International Community of issues that need to be addressed.  In a recent  discussion with a Pakistani University Student, Ghulam Hussain Mehesar,  who claims to be social worker conducting a case study on the Kolhi Bonded Laborers and other Dalits in the region it was advised  that the Pakistani Government is not intentionally starving the Hindu Bonded laborers to death, that Advocate Verji Kolhi is spending too much time focusing on his political influence rather than finding ways to provide his people with long term provisions of food, water and shelter and educating his people for the purpose of creating opportunities for them to be self sufficient.  No one has ever seen Mr. Mehesar's case study nor has Advocate Veerji Kolhi received any knowledge or information that this case study was being conducted by Mr. Mehesar on his people.  Mr. Mehesar would like to advise those he corresponds with that it is the responsibility of Advocate Veerji Kolhi to carry on these efforts with no support from the government.  IUFE disputes this claim on the following grounds.  First, when Bonded Laborers are released under the Bonded Labor Abolition Act of 1992, Criminal Procedure Code Section 491 the Landlords are well aware that this law protects them from being responsible for providing for the basic needs of Bonded Laborers once they are freed.   Why?  Because, according to Advocate Veerji Kolhi there is $20 Million Pakistani Rupees invested for Government Welfare agencies who are responsible to provide for the needs of newly freed Bonded Laborers. The Bonded Laborers who often endure years of hard labor under threat of death and/ or Torture and Rape which is often carried out, confiscation of personal possessions and animals are expected to without any rights, without the ability to clearly understand the true terms of their debt, and without food , water or shelter fend for themselves .  Second,  in the case of the 72 victims that Advocate Veerji Kolhi is still addressing in court, the 72 victims were threatened with open fire if they return to their native villages in Nagarparkar.  They are also under threat of abduction if they return to their own villages there.  It has taken more than 4 days for Selani Welfare Foundation to present the victims simply with water bottles and cool fruit drinks but no food.   They are temporarily housed at the Hyderabad Press Club and given breakfast and dinner.  This arrangement is only temporary, however.  What will be done for them in the long term.  Mr. Mehesar should be very aware that despite his claims that these Bonded Laborers are being provided for by the Government Welfare agencies  and that they are not being starved to death that only  the opposite has occurred.   Only minimal assistance has really been provided and only for a temporary period of time.  And finally, it is not Advocate Veerji Kolhi's responsibility to provide for every need!  It is the responsibility of the government who refuse to enforce laws upon the Landlords who abuse Bonded Laborers!  Does Mr. Mehesar realize that Advocate Veerji Kolhi personally out of his own expenses provided ONE YEAR of Food , Shelter and Rehabilitation efforts for eligible Bonded Laborers?  How much do the Pakistani Social Workers think Advocate Veerji Kolhi can focus on alone?  It must also be made clear that by his own statement, Advocate Veerji Kolhi is working in the political arena for SOCIAL CHANGE!  That means , putting an end to the practice of Bonded Labor and compensating the victims for years of Harassment , Death Threats, personal injury through torture, rape and confiscation of personal possessions and animals.  Advocate Veerji Kolhi is actively involved in working to change laws that favor the Landlords who are exploiting Bonded Laborers to their advantage in addition to every aspect of their rehabilitation and provisions.  This statement by IUFE has been written to clarify any misunderstandings that have arisen as a result of the reports on this case and others that are featured on this blog and to set the record straight.  IUFE also contends that Mr. Ghulam Hussain Mehesar is a University student and has not earned his graduate degree in Sociology or Social Work  which renders him NOT a professional in this field at this time.  IUFE would like to see a copy of the Case Study that has been conducted on the Kolhi's plight so that it can be confirmed that any information submitted on such a report is accurate.

IUFE CONTINUES TO DEMAND JUSTICE!  WE WILL NEVER BE SILENT AND WE WILL NEVER ALLOW FALSE REPORTS TO SURFACE IN MATTERS CONCERNING BONDED LABORERS!

"Where is Minister Minority Gian Chand Esrani?  Fourth Day has passed at Press Club Hyderabad!  The children of the victims, recovered farmers will die for want of food and shelter!  They are passing their lives with death threats!"

------Advocate Veerji Kolhi-----

We at IUFE have the following question for Minister Minority Gian Chand Esrani!  How quickly would you arrive to provide food , shelter and protection for these 72 victims who have been threatened with death on a daily basis if this were his own family members?  Is Mr. Esrani worthy of his position as Minister Minority? This issue will be forwarded to the International Community and Human Rights Organizations to show Mr. Esrani's negligence and lack of concern for Human Life!

" Landlord  Zubair Sehito's 72 Bonded peasants who were freed by order of the  High Court of Sindh stayed for a second night under the open sky in front of Hyderabad Press Club in spite of Higher Court's order. No  security  has been provided to the dislocated peasants and their  families....."

Police have still not responded to the demand of the 72 Bonded Laborers who were recently freed with the help of Advocate Veerji Kolhi.  This is the second night they have been exposed in the open sky with no security provided to protect them from harm!  It is quite ironic what one local newspaper  had to say about NGO's working to assist Bonded Laborers by bringing awareness  to Human Rights Organizations and the International Community.  The Article from the Pakistani Newspaper , The Pioneer is posted below:

In response to the claim made in this article by the Pakistani Publication The Pioneer. NGO means NON GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION! That means they are NOT receiving any money for the work they do! This is the first point. The second point is that the efforts of specific NGO's make the world aware of these cruel and inhuman practices that prevent people from living a free life or have access to their animals or their  personal possessions! The NGO's do much for the protection of these people! The world is aware that Bonded Labor must be stopped! That is due to Advocate Veerji Kolhi;s work and the work of those NGO's who are aware of people still being held in bondage in Pakistan! Reporting news in your own country is not enough! What are YOU doing those staff at Pioneer other than just reporting news? Are you helping these people in any way? Or are you just reporting news?

I notice that this newspaper seems to want to spread false information about NGO's that actively assist these people by raising the voice for their cases!  We will never be silent despite these false reports!  The paper is exposing the plight of these victims yet they are diminishing their suffering by offering no hope , no assistance , and no action to bring these people protection and security from being out in the open sky! Most of these victims are women and children and it is unacceptable that they are exposed to such danger after just receiving their freedom after 10 years of torture, rape, lack of food and severely harsh labor under cruel landlords! Without the international awareness about Bonded Labor that is circulated by the NGO's  and the work of our own Advocate Veerji Kolhi  , these cases would never be heard about in any other country except Pakistan and the Muslim Landlords who have no remorse but to torture, rape, snatch personal possessions and livestock would never be brought to justice!  Just setting the record straight!  IUFE will continue to provide awareness about these victims of Bonded Labor and actively work by Advocate Veerji Kolhi's side to bring about the end of the cruel practice of Bonded Labor forever!

-----IUFE UPDATE----

Special Report on Threat to Advocate Veerji Kolhi has revealed the identity of the person who called him and threatened him by telephone with death if he continued to raise the voice for the causes of Hindus

Aazam Nohani we have your name and your telephone number and serious action will be taken as a result of this threat made against Advocate Veerji Kolhi!  He has the right by LAW to defend his people from injustice!

"Two Days ago 72 Bonded Laborers were freed from bondage by order of the High court of Sindh. The freed persons have been engaged in protest because they have not received their personal possessions and their animals which were also ordered by the High Court to be returned to them. Currently there is no response from the police to carry out the orders of the High Court. The people are left whithout protection during their protest due to these circumstnces. On Monday I will file documents for contempt of courts for lack of response to the order of the High Court to return the personal possessions and the animals to the 72 freed persons.-"

After 72 people were freed by order of the High Court of Sindh  the police have not responded to the protests of these people whose personal possessions and livestock were confiscated by the Landlord!  As can be seen on the court order the people are free to live in freedom along with their personal possessions and their livestock! Advocate Veerji Kolhi will file a petition for Contempt of court for lack of police repsonse to carry out a direct order given by a Judge of the High Court of Sindh.   It is our hope that the people will receive their personal possessions and animals after 10 years of slavery under duress of torture and rape of women , starvation and severely harsh labor!  IUFE supports this protest led by Advocate Veerji Kolhi and will continue to support it until justice is served for these people and their personal possessions and animals are returned to them!  Thank you again Advocate Veerji Kolhi for your continued efforts to protect the rights of Bonded Laborers and all those oppressed under these conditions.

Advocate Veerji Kolhi received a death threat after he was successful in the High Court of Sindh with regard to a case of 72 Bonded Laborers who were recently set free.  This is the largest number of Bonded Laborers freed in one case!  IUFE congratulates Advocate Veerji Kolhi for winning a case that would seem impossible to have success with so great a number of people under the hardship of slavery.  In Facebook posts by two friends who are close to Advocate Veerji Kolhi  the death threat appeared as follows with friends giving support to Advocate Veerji Kolhi:

"We condemned the death threats to Veerji Kohli given by this number. 00923008240346.
According to veer ji from above number some one called him and said, " We will kill you if you raise voice for Hindus " !!

IUFE Thanks  Advocate Veerji Kolhi's friends for supporting him in his struggle to be a voice of his people and their only Advocate in whom they completely trust to handle their cases.

When I looked on Advocate Veerji Kolhi's wall I noticed a comment by Hassan Shabbir Rana that was the following statement:

"I also got a call from 00913338240346 and got threats from Kohli ji. does not prove anything."

Here is my question Hassan! What are you trying to prove by making this statement?  Could it be that you are the person who threatened  Advocate Veerji Kolhi in a recent telephone Call?  You can be assured that we will find out!  Your statement in itself is self  incriminating!

IUFE will make this threat public!  Medias will be notified and International Human Rights Organizations will have this on the record!  Advocate Veerji Kolhi is a voice for his people by LAW!  He has every right to speak for Hindus as they are his people!  His friends at IUFE his personal friends  and his family will stand behind him  in all his efforts!  We will never accept any death threats and will act aggressively to combat them!  All International Human Rights Organizations will be notified!

IUFE  compliments Advocate Veerji Kolhi on his tireless efforts to bring justice to Tari d/o Kengho Kolhi who was brutally raped by  two men, Hussain Laghari and Jagsi Kolhi nonstop every day for a period of seven months and who is currently with child!  The investigation for this case will commence on 26 July 2014 and we are hopeful that the court will punish these two men to the full extent of the law.  Rape is never acceptable for any reason! Victims are not the ones at fault for these heinous crimes!  Only the perpetrator is! Repayment of Debt is not a reason to commit a horrific crime such as this!.  A young girl in Pakistan does not have any means of self defense against more than one assailant!  It is very fortunate for her that she has an advocate such as Veerji Kolhi to help her come forward and register her complaint legally and without fear!  In Pakistan  the culture leads a girl to believe that if she comes forward to register a complaint about rape that it is a shameful act!  Tari is only to be commended for her bravery!  She did not remain silent!  Neither did her family.  We also, her friends at IUFE will be her voice and her support!  We are looking very forward to a very positive outtcome as Advocate Veerji Kolhi continues to pursue justice at every level in this case and to the highest degree.  We are with you Tari and Kengho  and we will never leave your side in this matter. We are your friends and we are always your support.  The link below is a Protest led by Advocate Veerji Kolhi at the Press Club Hyderabad to raise the voice for Tari and all rape victims who have endured the horrors of gang rape.

!4 Year Old Girl Raped at Gunpoint for 7 Months By: Advocate Veerji Kolhi and Zemira Eli Natan

Zemira Eli Natan
Executive Director
International Unity for Freedom and Equality

Please watch Zemira Eli Natan's interview with Vlad Tepes regarding this case. She discusses the magnitude of this case and issues that make a case such as this so very serious when it occurs in a Muslim country.  Zemira provides an explanation of Bonded Labor and the condition in which the people enslaved live. Bonded Laborers are allegedly protected under the Bonded Labor Abolition Act of 1992, however often these laws do not provide protection to the bonded laborers becuase they do not understand or are not informed of their basic rights under this law.

The victim of this case, Tari D/O Khengo Kolhi and her father Khengo Kolhi is currently under Advocate Veerji Kolhi"s protection.  Advocate Veerji Kolhi will continue to challenge the accused in  this case in court until the accused are in police custody and a trial is set to bring the accused to immediate justice for RAPE at GUNPOINT!

According to a study carried out by Human Rights Watch there is a rape that occurs in Pakistan once every two hours and a gang rape that occurs  every eight!

IUFE DEMANDS THAT THE ACCUSED BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE IMMEDIATELY!  THIS CASE HAS BEEN PUBLICIZED INTERNATIONALLY AND FORWARDED TO AGENCIES RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROTECTION THE RIGHTS OF BONDED LABORERS

" In the matter concerning Tari D/O Kengho Kolhi.  7-8 Months ago Tari's mother received a snake bite.  Tari's father admitted her mother in the hospital. Her mother was hospitalized for 6 months.  Her father was with her mother in the hospital, so Tari was left alone for 6 months. After 6 months, Tari's mother died.  Her father took her mother's dead body to be buried at the gravesite in Nagarparkar.  When Tari's father came back from Nagarparkar,   he learned that the Landord's Manager, and Security Guard Jagsi S/O Hamero Kolhi had raped his daughter every day for 7 months at gunpoint.  The Landlord's manager and security guard, Jagsi S/O Hamero Kolhi raped Tari continuously for 7 months while Jagsi held her down with a gun pointed at her head.  Tari endured this terror daily for a period of 7 months time! Tari told her father what happened when he came home.  Her father took his daughter to Police Station Missan  to register  an FIR against the rapist.  FIR was registered today  Crime No. 7/2014, u/s 376. 506/2 PPC for Rape at Gunpoint."

"14 Year old girl Tari d/o Khengo Kolhi raped by Hussain Laghari for 4 months at gunpoint. She is now 7 months pregnant. Incident occurred at Village Missan Taluka Chamber District Tando Allahyar"
====Advocate Veerji Kolhi----

Advocate Veerji Kolhi has just notified IUFE of a crime that is one of many that are committed by Landlords in Pakistan.  14 Year old Tari, a mere child herself is placed in a position that will destroy her future and her life.  Hussain Laghari raped Tari for 4 months at gunpoint with no mercy.  She is now 7 months pregnant and her future is destroyed as a result!  What  compensation can be given that will make up for the violence and abuse that this young girl has endured?  There is none!  There is only bringing this Landlord and heartless rapist to justice for this terrible crime!  This girl is one of many in Bonded Labor who endure this.  The girls are given as a price for repayment of debt to the Landlord who continues to raise the debt incurred without any hope for the Bonded laborers to repay the debt.  They are then left helpless to watch the landlords take their daughters, use them and abuse them at gunpoint !  These crimes must be stopped immediately and we will do everything to make this public until the family and child to whom this crime was committed will receive proper justice in the arrest of this Landlord so that he may pay for his crimes.  IUFE supports Advocate Veerji Kolhi in his efforts to protect the members of his community and assist this family  during this time of suffering for them.  We will never be silent until we receive justice!

Update from Advocate Rabindra Ghosh More Attacks on Hindu Villages

Zemira Eli Natan
Executive Director
Internatinal Unity for Freedom and Equality

On 4th of June,2014 at about 8 a.m to 9 a.m. a groups of Muslim perpetrators armed with sharp weapons, Iron Rod, Lathi, and country made gun attacked Minority Hindus located at Fatehabad village within Municipal area of Comilla district.
Bangladesh minority watch (BDMW) immediately communicated with S.P. Comilla and Officer in charge of Debidwar police station who confirmed that two perpetrators have been arrested in this connection.
It is also alleged that 25 - 30 Muslim Perpetrators attacked on Hindu Minorities physically for protesting illegal activities on Hindu girl from harassment or eve teasing. They also became angry because they were prohibited from doing illegal activities beside the Hindu temple "Lokanath Brammachari Temple". On the date of event they attacked on the Hindu houses and the guests of the said temple. While those victims were sleeping at  their houses at night, even on the next day at 8.30 A.M they have beaten Shajal Dutta(50) while he was going to shop at the nearest market.

BDMW have decided to investigate the incident at the spot soon. It is also unfortunate that recently at Homna Upazila, Comilla District 35 houses of Hindu Community were attacked and looted on the ground of blasphemy. Recently BDMW and BCHRDsubmitted a writ petition before High Court on May 12. Following the writ petition, the High Court ordered the government to provide protection to Hindu minorities and their households in Comilla, but it is unfortunate that the government totally failed to protect the Minority communities at Debidwar Upazila, Comill District despite High court order is in existence.
BDMW is also very much concerned with the repeated attack on Hindu Minorities at Comilla. BDMW demand a immediate drastic action against the perpetrators responsible for eve teasing, attack on Women and Children, injuring inmates of the houses and they should be brought to book as per law.

With Best Regards
